Everything you need to know about CBD vape pens

For some users, CBD vaping is the most effective form of ingestion when it comes to consuming cannabidiol. It is often not only about the objective benefits of the small vaporizers, but many also associate the sensation of inhalation with inner peace and relaxation.

However, this kind of enjoyment is not an invention of modern times, people have been steaming for centuries, albeit in more primitive forms than today. Not to forget the Indians with their peace pipes, also Egyptians used hot stones to heat herbs and inhale their vapours. We explain to you what types of vape pens there are and what you have to consider when buying one.

What types of CBD vape pens are on the market today?

CBD pens can basically be divided into three types: Disposables or also called e-shisha, vape pens with replaceable cartridges and vaporizers.

Disposables are the cheapest option in the short term and ideal for trying out CBD vaping. Here you get an "All in One Kit" that is intended for a limited number of inhalations - usually around 100 puffs. When the extract is used up, the complete battery carrier including cartridge is disposed of. For the sake of the environment, please dispose of it properly.

If you are looking for a more sustainable solution, look for vape pens with replaceable cartridges such as the freigeist CBD Pen. These are easy to use and are much more environmentally friendly and cheaper in the long run, as both the battery and the cartridge can be purchased separately. Operation is simple - insert the cartridge into the charged pen and pull slowly on the top of the mouthpiece, this activates the automatic draw and produces vapour. There are also models with a button that you have to press at the same time as inhaling. It is best to consult the instruction manual that comes with the vaporiser.

Vaporizers are specifically designed for use with solids such as herbs and flowers. The application is somewhat more complicated compared to already filled systems. The price is also relatively high and therefore not recommended for beginners. However, vaporizers offer the most "natural" taste, as the flowers are directly heated or vaporised.

Effect of CBD Vapes

To better understand the effects of CBD, you should know about the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our body. This is a kind of internal communication network that consists of several receptors. CBD or cannabinoids dock onto these interfaces and thereby trigger a wide variety of processes¹ such as emotions, pain sensation or sleep behaviour².

When vaporised, the CBD goes directly into your bloodstream via your lungs. Depending on the bioavailability of the extract used, 50-60% of the cannabidiol it contains enters your body within seconds and interacts with your ECS. Compared to CBD drops or capsules, which have to pass through the oral mucosa and many other areas of the body before finally reaching your blood, this is probably the fastest absorption of CBD. However, the duration of effect of orally ingested products is somewhat longer, generally 2-3 hours more⁴.

Vaping vs. smoking

Smoking produces significantly more pollutants than vaping. Smoke is produced by the combustion of a substance such as tobacco or the paper that goes with it. The increased temperatures produce harmful substances³ that are hazardous to health. Since the temperature is significantly lower when vaporising - ideally 180 - 200 °C, the active ingredients are fully preserved and the vapour remains pleasantly cool when inhaled.

What should I consider when buying

You should take a closer look at the ingredients in particular. Often, cheap vape distillates are mixed with other carriers like propylene glycol to increase the viscosity of the oil. It's best to only get cartridges or vape extracts that use 100% natural ingredients to reduce the risk of harmful vapours. Also, the manufacturer should preferably be from the EU and provide you with certificates of analysis or reports from external laboratories. Especially if you are allergic to certain herbal substances, you should carefully examine the product before use and consult your doctor.
